TypeAloud collects no data. Dictation runs entirely on your Mac. Your voice and your transcripts never leave your computer.

What TypeAloud does with your voice

TypeAloud converts your speech to text entirely on your Mac, using Apple's on-device speech recognition (and, optionally, a locally-run Parakeet model). Audio is processed on-device and is never recorded to a file, never uploaded, and never sent to Apple or to us. TypeAloud contains no analytics, no trackers, and no third-party services.

Network use

TypeAloud makes network connections for exactly two purposes: a one-time download of the on-device speech model, and Mac App Store purchase and receipt validation (via StoreKit) for the free trial and the lifetime unlock. Neither connection ever carries your audio or your transcripts. There is no other network use of any kind.

Dictation history

TypeAloud keeps a local history of your recent dictations (up to 50 items, pruned after 30 days) so you can recover or reuse something you said. History lives only in TypeAloud's own sandboxed container on your Mac. You can turn history off entirely, or clear it at any time, in Settings → History.

Permissions

Microphone — TypeAloud listens only while you're actively dictating, and stops the moment you finish.

Speech Recognition — required by macOS to convert your speech to text on-device.

Accessibility — used for exactly one thing: after a dictation, TypeAloud places the transcript on your clipboard and posts a single ⌘V keystroke so it lands at your cursor, then restores whatever was on your clipboard before. TypeAloud calls no Accessibility API to read or inspect other apps — it never observes your screen or another app's contents. If this permission isn't granted, nothing is lost: the transcript is left on your clipboard with a "Copied — press ⌘V" notice instead.

Vocabulary Import/Export

TypeAloud can import or export your custom vocabulary. This feature reads or writes only the single file you choose in the standard macOS open/save panel — it has no other access to your files.

Purchases

Dictation with Apple's on-device engine is always free. The Enhanced (Parakeet) engine is free for 7 days, then unlocks permanently with a one-time purchase. Purchases and restores are handled entirely by Apple's App Store / StoreKit; TypeAloud never sees your payment details.

Changes

If this policy ever changes, the new version will appear at this address with a new date. Since TypeAloud collects nothing, there is little to change.
