TypeAloud Support

TypeAloud turns your voice into text in any app: press your shortcut, speak, and the words land at your cursor — entirely on your Mac. Questions and problems: email support@muhyuddin.com. Known limit in this version

Connect your headset or microphone before you start a dictation. Switching the input device in the middle of a dictation is not supported yet.

Common questions

Why does TypeAloud ask for Microphone access?

To hear you while you dictate. TypeAloud listens only while a dictation is in progress, and nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Why does TypeAloud ask for Speech Recognition access?

macOS requires this permission to convert your speech to text. Recognition happens entirely on your Mac.

Why does TypeAloud ask for Accessibility access?

TypeAloud uses this permission for one thing only: after you dictate, it places the transcript on your clipboard and posts a single ⌘V keystroke so it lands at your cursor in whatever app you were typing in, then restores your previous clipboard. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility and enable TypeAloud (click + and choose it if it isn't listed). If you'd rather not grant this permission, dictation still works — see the next question.

What does "Copied — press ⌘V" mean?

If Accessibility access isn't granted, or you dictate into a secure field (like a password box), TypeAloud can't paste automatically. Instead it puts the transcript on your clipboard and shows this notice — nothing is ever lost, press ⌘V yourself to place it.

Where is my dictation history, and can I turn it off?

Open the menu bar item to see your recent dictations. TypeAloud keeps your last 50 dictations (pruned after 30 days) on your Mac. You can turn history off entirely, or clear it at any time, in Settings → History.

How does Vocabulary Import/Export work?

In Settings → Vocabulary, Import and Export read or write only the single file you pick in the standard open/save panel — TypeAloud has no other access to your files.

How does the free trial and purchase work?

Dictation with Apple's on-device engine is always free. The Enhanced engine is free for 7 days, starting from your first successful dictation. After that, a one-time purchase unlocks it permanently — no subscription. Your history stays readable in every state. If you've already purchased, use Restore Purchases in Settings → Unlock.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. Dictation runs entirely on your Mac. See the privacy policy.
